That's a total of 4 weeks where you can't focus on school related Social Links. The same can be said about the exam week and the week before exams when no school related Social Links will want to hang out. As a result, the Winter Holiday can be quite frustrating simply because there's not too much to do during the day and in the evenings outside of school. By that point your priority will probably be leveling up the Social Links that require maximum stats: all of them are central characters, and all of them are only available at school. December is particularly bad when it comes to pacing - not only you have to put up with the dated dungeon crawling, but leveling Social Links comes to a halt because of the exams and the Winter Holiday. All I really wanted to do by that point was maxing the remaining Social Links I cared about. To be fair, not having to do a lot in the evenings means that you can finish the dungeon sections in smaller chunks, but by the time you get there you have already spammed the same basic formula for acing dungeon crawling in this game to that it all feels like filler now. Tartarus suddenly becomes a much more tedious experience given the length of the last two sections. There's not much to do in the evenings assuming you maxed out your stats and the night-time Social Links, which can be done so comfortably by the end of October. And it's not just the dungeon itself, but the pacing as a whole comes to a halt by the latter third of the game, particularly by the end of November/beginning of December.

The problem here is that the last two sections are double the size of the previous sections, which up until this point were divided into two parts, each to be completed by the end of the month. It works so well that the story fights become a little bit too easy.Īnd it's a relatively enjoyable loop until you reach the latter third of the game, particularly during the last two sections of Tartarus. Rules are simple enough: abuse enemy weaknesses, use buffs during boss battles, fuse new personas after each boss (always have the 6 elements available). In fact, there's absolutely no need to grind on Normal difficulty as long as you explore each floor and kill every shadow that you encounter. You knew it would be dated when you decided to play the game. And its biggest flaw is by far the dungeon crawling part. "Oh one more week" you'll say, and before you know it, it's already been one month, sometimes a whole season.īut it doesn't always flow, and when it doesn't, you are reminded that this is an almost 15 year old game (as of November 2020). These are the 4 core parts that make a Persona game, and when they align well together it's not uncommon to get sucked in the game for sessions as long as 6 to 8 hours. When it flows, it really flows - 33% social simulation - 33% dungeon crawling with turn-based combat - 33% plot progression - united in a day-by-day calendar sort of progression. Your first Persona game is always be a one of a kind experience, and the core of what makes P4 stand apart from the myriad of other JRPGS and video games as a whole is present in Persona 3.

One year ago I was introduced to the series (and concurrently, to JRPGS) through Persona 4 Golden. So I finally went back and finished Persona 3. It's a good game overall, but it definitely shows its age. It's finally over and, to be honest, I'm glad it is.
